If you are going to use a specialist agency for finding your chef, then in most cases there will be an introductory fee. You should discuss this with your agent prior to beginning the search.
Here are 3 main categories for private chef employment and costs.
1. Daily or part time basis
The private chef is engaged to work from one to several days. Either on separate occasions or consecutively. The requirements of the assignment will dictate the amount of hours that the chef will work. Hours can be agreed prior to the booking being confirmed. Working hours will be a contributory factor in the agreed daily salary rate. In addition you will need to have budget for the ingredients. A shopping budget can be agreed on before or after the menu has been designed.
Normal cost range: £100.00 - £400.00 per day
The private chef is engaged for a couple of weeks through to several months. The requirements of the assignment will dictate the amount of hours per day, and days per week that the chef will work. If the chef is required to travel then you may offer accommodation. Additional benefits such as accommodation and use of a vehicle for shopping should be considered when determining costs. Short-term assignments can be offered on a self employed, or contractual basis.
Normal cost range: £400.00 - £2000.00 per week
3. Full-time, long-term, contractual
The chef is engaged for a year or more, normally with a view to extending the term. Working days normally vary between 5-6. The position can be offered with or without accommodation. You may offer the chef a vehicle or some other form of transportation for the shopping. In cases where the chef is employed outside of their home country then return flights each year might be offered. Tax and insurance contributions, medical provision and pension contributions could be a consideration of the final remuneration package.
Normal cost range: £35,000 - £70,000 per year
